| Variable | BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) | TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) |
|---|---|---|
| Definition | Calories burned to keep vital organs functioning at absolute rest. | Total daily calories burned including activity, exercise, and digestion. |
| Formula Relationship | The starting base of TDEE. | BMR × Physical Activity Factor. |
| Can you eat below it? | Generally not recommended (severe restriction risk). | Yes, to create a fat-loss calorie deficit. |
Practical Strategy Guidelines
Your BMR is the biological minimum energy needed for cellular survival. Eating below BMR for extended periods signals your metabolic system to downregulate thyroid output, reduce body temperature, and suppress non-essential activity levels.
To lose body fat healthily, aim to eat at a 15-20% deficit below TDEE, but try to keep intake above your estimated BMR unless you are under medical supervision.
