The fundamental difference between Lean Bulking and Maingaining lies in how they manipulate energy balance to support muscle growth.
A Lean Bulk requires a controlled calorie surplus — typically 5% to 10% above your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). This surplus provides the extra energy needed for muscle protein synthesis beyond what maintenance calories can support. The tradeoff is that some of the surplus calories will be stored as body fat, even with optimal nutrient timing.
Maingaining (Body Recomposition) targets caloric parity or a micro-surplus (0% to +5% above TDEE). The goal is to provide exactly enough energy to support muscle repair and growth from training, while minimizing fat accumulation. This approach is slower for muscle gain but produces minimal fat spillover, making it ideal for those who want to stay lean year-round.

3. Biological Mechanics
The difference between lean bulking and maingaining is ultimately about energy partitioning — how your body allocates surplus calories between muscle tissue and fat stores.
During a lean bulk, the calorie surplus drives higher rates of muscle protein synthesis (MPS) by providing a consistent energy surplus. Insulin levels are higher, which reduces muscle protein breakdown (MPB) and creates a more anabolic environment. The tradeoff is that some of the surplus inevitably gets stored as fat — this is biologically unavoidable.
During maingaining, the body relies on energy from food plus stored body fat to fuel MPS. This requires higher protein intake (1.8-2.2 g/kg) to ensure amino acids are available for muscle repair even when total energy is limited. Fat gain is minimal because there is no energy surplus to store, but MPS rates are lower, resulting in slower muscle growth.
The choice between these approaches depends on your tolerance for temporary fat gain, your training experience, and your timeline for achieving your physique goals.

Choose Lean Bulk If:
- You have 2+ years of consistent lifting experience.
- Your body fat is low (under 12% male, under 20% female).

- You prefer staying lean year-round.
