The Verdict on Exercise for Body Composition
During a caloric deficit, your body is looking to conserve energy by metabolizing costly tissues. Muscle is highly active metabolically, while fat tissue is passive storage. Without the intense stimulus of heavy lifting (weights), your body will catabolize muscle tissue for fuel.
To optimize body composition, make weights (resistance training) the core foundation of your program, and use cardio primarily as a tool for cardiovascular health and auxiliary calorie burn.
